A New Rule - Learner drivers To Be Allowed on Motorways

Learner drivers have never been allowed to drive on motorways, but from Monday 4 June 2018, learner drivers will be able to take driving lessons on motorways.
Learner drivers will need to be accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual controlled car. Motorway lessons are not mandatory and therefore remain the decision of the driving instructor regarding when the learner driver is competent enough for motorway lessons.

This will better prepare potential drivers on how to drive at high speeds, maintain lane discipline and overtake when required on multi-lane roads. The purpose of this exercise is to help improve overall safety, awareness and anticipation of the actions of other drivers at high speed.
The change only applies to learner car drivers and it is important to remember that it is still illegal for a learner that is not accompanied by a driving instructor to drive on a motorway.
Trainee driving instructors are not allowed to take learner drivers on the motorway.
At this stage, motorway driving is not part of the driving test.
It may prove beneficial and practical to first practice on a dual carriageway because similar rules apply.
Some examples regarding learning goals to achieve on motorways are training on how to join and leave the motorway, overtake and use lanes correctly, practise driving at higher speeds, understand motorway specific traffic signs and understand what to do if a vehicle breaks down on a motorway.
These changes will help learner drivers develop a broader driving experience before taking their driving test and improve their confidence to drive on the motorway unsupervised after passing their driving test.

Benefits of booking an Intensive Driving Course

Learning to drive with an approved driving instructor is important to help ensure that the correct information is received, and the best teaching techniques are used to help reach test standard. Once the basics of driving has been learnt, practicing with family and friends can be beneficial to enhance your driving skills.

Techniques –Always best to learn with a Professional Driving Instructor, to help better understand the driving test requirements and test routes, as this will help build your overall awareness of the areas that you may encounter on the driving test, which will also give you more confidence with the independent drive exercise. There are different exercises that may be required on the practical test, such as reversing into or out of a parking bay, parallel park and pulling over to the righthand side of the road to reverse two car lengths and then rejoin the traffic. All of which you will be guided through by your driving instructor.

Confidence – will build the more practice that is dedicated to the driving techniques and the general road safety. Driving independently with confidence is not far away when you are learning intensively.

Traffic and road regulations –  Learning and passing the theory test in the early stages of the driving will help tremendously with forward planning and anticipating the actions of other road users. Also, it helps with general driving through junctions, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings and identifying and reacting to road signs and markings.  The driving instructor will give a full explanation on risk management that is a major part of driving.

When booking a Pass Now Ltd intensive driving course, a local approved driving instructor registered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will be recommended to teach potential drivers at any level of driving to help towards becoming a safe driver and having a good understanding of the road craft techniques.
