Learners Drivers Can Now Legally Drive on Motorways

Learner drivers are now able to drive on a motorway providing they are accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual controlled vehicle.

This change will help learner drivers gain a broader understanding of how to enter and exit motorways, practice lane discipline and overtaking at higher speeds.
This will also help towards building the learner’s confidence and be better prepared as a qualified driver when driving unsupervised on the motorways.
It is important to note that the change is only applicable to learner drivers in cars not motorcycles. Furthermore, a trainee driving instructor cannot take learner drivers on the motorway.

Why are these changes being made?
The government has allowed learner drivers to drive on motorways so that they:
· Gain experience whilst accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor
· Be more familiar with road procedures whilst driving solo on the motorway
· Be better prepared to overtake at high speeds
· Develop an understanding of motorway traffic signs and road layouts
· Have a better understanding of breakdown procedures
· Generally, build confidence and awareness

Driving instructor training
Instructors are required to use a dual controlled car and use a driving school roof sign or display L plates on the front and rear during motorway lessons.
It is important to be considerate to learner drivers on the motorways:
Always leave the correct distance from the vehicle in front and allow sufficient gaps when moving in after overtaking, especially on wet and icy roads.
Learner driver’s anticipation and overall awareness regarding the actions of the other driver will be less than experience driver’s.

Principles Pass Now follows for Making its Students Safe Drivers

If you want to learn to drive, there’s nothing better than Professional Driving Lessons. Professionals are pro at teaching the learners in a way that they grasp each and every tactic taught and implement it in an efficient way. Instructors do not just pay attention towards the techniques of driving, but they also help in inculcating good driving habits, habits that make you a safe driver.  We, at Pass Now help the learner become a safe driver by making them adapt to some simple practices, such as:

Safe Driving for Life:
The best way to learn to drive is to be taught by an approved driving instructor registered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Professional driving lessons will help you achieve your driving goals within a safe environment, because your instructor will select the best areas to suit your level of driving and teach you at your own pace by using teaching techniques to suit. The main aim is to learn such driving skills to help you drive safely for life.

Don’t get distracted
Always turn your mobile phone off whilst driving to help avoid being distracted. Your attention should be on planning ahead and carrying out periodic checks in your mirrors. Throughout your course you will be taught awareness and how to anticipate the actions of other road users.

Rules of the road
Whilst learning to drive you will learn the general rules of the road, but it proves invaluable to study the highway code and start practicing the hazard perception videos before your driving course starts, as this will enable you to better plan ahead and have a clearer understanding of the appropriate actions to take.
It proves beneficial to start to learn to drive with an approved driving instructor and then practice what you have learnt with family & friends.

Pass Now Ltd offer a variety of intensive driving courses to suit your driving skill level and budget. A New Rule - Learner drivers To Be Allowed on Motorways

Learner drivers have never been allowed to drive on motorways, but from Monday 4 June 2018, learner drivers will be able to take driving lessons on motorways.
Learner drivers will need to be accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual controlled car. Motorway lessons are not mandatory and therefore remain the decision of the driving instructor regarding when the learner driver is competent enough for motorway lessons.

This will better prepare potential drivers on how to drive at high speeds, maintain lane discipline and overtake when required on multi-lane roads. The purpose of this exercise is to help improve overall safety, awareness and anticipation of the actions of other drivers at high speed.
The change only applies to learner car drivers and it is important to remember that it is still illegal for a learner that is not accompanied by a driving instructor to drive on a motorway.
Trainee driving instructors are not allowed to take learner drivers on the motorway.
At this stage, motorway driving is not part of the driving test.
It may prove beneficial and practical to first practice on a dual carriageway because similar rules apply.
Some examples regarding learning goals to achieve on motorways are training on how to join and leave the motorway, overtake and use lanes correctly, practise driving at higher speeds, understand motorway specific traffic signs and understand what to do if a vehicle breaks down on a motorway.
These changes will help learner drivers develop a broader driving experience before taking their driving test and improve their confidence to drive on the motorway unsupervised after passing their driving test.
