Learn about The Cockpit Drill

To help save you money before booking an intensive driving course, you can help familiarise yourself with the cockpit drill. This is a procedure that you carry out each time you enter the car before driving.
The details below will help you to learn the cockpit drill in a private car.
To begin with, remember ‘DSSSM’, which stands for basic parts of the cockpit drill,
namely doors, seat, steering, seatbelt, and mirrors.

Doors
Make sure all your doors are closed.
In order to check that the doors are correctly closed, look in your side mirrors to make sure the doors are flush with the car bodywork.
When possible, you can also manually test the doors and recheck when you turn the ignition on, as a symbol on the dashboard will show if doors are not closed.
Seat
Adjust the height of the seat to ensure a good view through the front and back windscreens, ensuring that the steering wheel and head restraints do not obscure your vision.
Adjust the base of your seat so you can depress the clutch pedal to the floor and still have a slight bend in your left knee.
Adjust the back of your seat to reach the steering wheel with both hands positioned at ‘ten to two’ or ‘quarter to three’ to achieve an even balance on the steering wheel.
Adjust the head restraint so that the back of your head is centered on the cushion.
Seatbelt
The seatbelt must be applied flat against your chest and stomach with no twists in the belt, fully secured and adjusted to the correct height.
SteeringTo adjust the steering wheel, it must be positioned so it does not obstruct your view out of the front windscreen or when you apply the push and pull steering method

You must also be able to reach the controls located on the steering column with your fingertips without removing your hands from the steering wheel.
Mirrors
Adjust the interior mirror to give you a clear view through the back windscreen.
Adjust the exterior mirrors so that one third of the mirror is taken up with your car and two thirds gives you a clear parallel view back down the road or pavement.
Pre-Start Checks
Check handbrake is fully on and the gear stick is in a neutral position.
This information when practiced correctly with save you some time at the start of your intensive driving course.

Some Helpful Tips

Provisional Driving Licence:

You can apply for your provisional driving licence online by visiting the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) website or ask your local Post Office for a D1 application form.
Apply for your provisional licence up to 2 months before your 17th birthday or up to 3 months before your 16th birthday if you are registered as disabled.

When you are in receipt of your driving licence you can book your theory test from the date of the legal age to drive.

Theory Test:
You will need to pass a two parts test; the first part is a multiple choice test and the second is a Hazard Perception test. Both parts are done on a computer by using a touch screen for the questions and a computer mouse for the hazard perception to test your response on the 14 video clips.
Even though you are in a room with several other candidates you are screened from one another and you have the option to wear headphones to drown out any distractions. You must pass both parts.

Multiple Choice Questions:
Before the test starts it is important to listen carefully to the explanation on how the test works.
A practice session of the multiple choice questions is available to help get used to the layout of the test. The real test will start at the end of the practice session.

As a multiple-choice questions test you will be provided with several possible answers of which you need to select the required amount of answers for each question.

You have the option to flag questions if you are unsure and would like to answer at a later stage in the test. Remember never to leave a question unanswered, even if you guess. An unanswered question will be marked as wrong.

Take advantage of the three minutes break before starting the Hazard Perception test.
You need to answer 50 questions within 57 minutes and the pass mark is 43 out of 50.

Hazard Perception Test
Before the test starts it is important to listen carefully to the explanation on how the test works.
You will be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. In 13 of the clips there is one developing hazard and 1 clip has two developing hazards.

As you do not know which developing hazard has been selected by the computer, you will need to click on whatever situation you deem a hazard.

The score for each clip ranges from 0-5. The pass mark is 44 out of 75.

Driving Test:

Eyesight test:

You will have to read a number plate from a distance of:
20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate
20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate
You can write down what you see if you can’t speak English or have difficulty reading.

Show Me Tell Me Questions

The 'show me tell me' questions require you to explain to the Examiner where and how to check the tyres, brakes, fluid levels, lights, direction indicators, power steering and horn. You will be asked two questions, one 'show me' and one 'tell me' question. One question will be asked at the start of the test and the second question on the move during your test.

At the end of your driving test the Examiner will tell you the result and explain any driving faults that you may have accumulated throughout the test.

What is an intensive driving course?

An Intensive Driving Course will help you to achieve test standard within just a few weeks. Therefore, it could be possible to complete your intensive driving course, pass your practical test and drive away with a full licence. An intensive driving course is the solution if you are limited on time. This type of course can help potential drivers at any level of driving.

You agree with your driving instructor the dates and times for your course to suit your diaries. Driving can prove practical to your daily schedule, so you don’t have to rely on others or public transport.

An intensive driving course is taught over a short time, this will help you to focus on the required driving tasks to reach test standard. You can agree with your driving instructor regarding how many hours per day you would like to dedicate to the course, which could be between 3-6 hours.
This course can be done before passing your theory test, all you need to do is holdback some of the hours of training and complete them just prior to your practical test. However, the earlier you pass your theory test the sooner you could possibly pass your driving test.

So why wait? Book your intensive driving course with Pass Now Ltd by booking online and saving £20 or call 0333 011 0391.

Is there a guarantee that I’ll pass an intensive driving course?
Driving schools cannot guarantee a practical test pass, because the test is conducted by a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Examiner who will access your ability to drive in a safe and controlled manner. You’re driving instructor will teach you the required road skills and help you to reach test standard. However, the test outcome will be based on your driving skills throughout the test.

Intensive Driving Course Requirements?

As a potential driver you probably would like to be driving as soon as possible. An intensive driving course can help you complete the required teaching hours within just a few weeks and potentially pass your practical driving test shortly after.

There are certain things to consider, such as Time Management: it is preferable to complete the course within a few weeks, to help with progress and retaining the information to improve your driving ability. Theory test: Try to pass your theory test before you start your intensive driving course, even though this is not essential it will benefit your understanding of the highway code relating to the general driving and may enable you to take the practical driving test sooner. Cost: Choose an intensive course to suit your driving ability, not your financial situation, as this could have an impacted on the outcome if you have not booked enough teaching hours to help you reach driving test standard. Intensive or Semi-Intensive Driving Course do have great benefits over weekly driving lessons and can help you drive away with a full driving licence within possibly a few weeks.

To help aim for a successful outcome, plan well in advance by passing your theory test, this will enable Pass Now Ltd to book your practical test to hopefully coincide with the end of your intensive course. Also book the number of hours to suit your driving requirements and ensure you have arranged your diary for the intensive course dates.

Pass Now Ltd offers different options of courses to suit your driving needs at affordable prices. Each course has test offers and a £20 discount when you book online.
